A Road Trip Reminder Every Jobseeker Needs

Headed back home after a 5-day tour across Texas.

Y’all…this state is BIG.

We started on the Gulf Coast, made our way through the Hill Country, spent time exploring neighboring towns, headed north to Dallas for a celebration of life, and then took the scenic route home through the piney woods of East Texas.

Texas really does have a little bit of everything.

But the most memorable part of the trip wasn’t the scenery. It was reconnecting with old friends.

Friends from a completely different chapter of life. Back when we didn’t have smartphones, social media, or the internet. Relationships were built face-to-face, and staying connected required a lot more effort.

What struck me most was how quickly those friendships picked right back up, even after years apart. And it reminded me of something I tell jobseekers all the time:

Don’t underestimate the power of reconnecting.

If you’re navigating a career transition, don’t overlook the people already in your network. Former colleagues. Previous managers. College classmates. Old clients. Friends you’ve lost touch with.

You never know where a conversation might lead.

Sometimes it’s encouragement. Sometimes it’s a new perspective.

And sometimes it’s an opportunity you never saw coming.

In a market where hiring decisions are taking longer and competition is increasing, relationships can often open doors that applications alone cannot.

Research consistently shows that referrals remain one of the most effective paths to landing interviews and job opportunities.
