The Conversation that Can Change Your Job Search

When people hear the word networking, they often picture a crowded room, a stack of business cards, and the pressure to say exactly the right thing.

But networking does not have to be complicated. At its best, it is simply a conversation—one rooted in curiosity, generosity, and a genuine interest in getting to know someone.

I saw a beautiful example of this recently. A friend of mine was navigating a challenging job search, so I introduced her to a jobseeker group I’m closely aligned with – Tuesday Tuneup, run by my good friend Joey Himelfarb. Click HERE for more info on this uplifting event.

She began attending the weekly meetings, refining her skills, meeting new people, and expanding her circles of influence. Over time, those conversations and connections added up. She received an offer—and now she is returning to that same group to share what worked, what didn’t, and what she learned along the way.

That is the full-circle power of COMMUNITY.

Three Ways to Make Networking Feel More Natural

Lead with curiosity.
Approach each conversation by asking, “How can I help this person?” rather than focusing on what you might get from them. People remember genuine interest.

Look beyond your own industry.
Some of the most valuable connections may come from people outside your usual professional circle. Different industries bring different perspectives, introductions, and opportunities.

Follow up.
A good conversation is only the beginning. Create a cadence for staying in touch, and consider scheduling another conversation a month or two later. This is how new connections become meaningful relationships.

Your résumé and LinkedIn profile are important career tools. But relationships, visibility, and thoughtful follow-up are what help turn those tools into opportunities.
