Before the Wake-Up Call
Layoffs happen. Industries shift. Companies restructure. The question isn’t whether change will happen—it’s when.
The professionals who bounce back fastest aren’t the ones who panic and apply everywhere. They are the ones who prepared before the storm arrived.
If you’re facing a layoff, start playing offense. Save performance reviews, project wins, and leadership feedback while you still have access. Document your measurable results. Update your résumé and LinkedIn profile. Then make a Top 10 list of companies you admire and begin having real conversations with people in those organizations.
If you’ve been laid off, focus on structure over panic. Target roles that genuinely align with your skills and goals. Block time for networking, applications, and skill-building. Protect your mental health, too. A job search is demanding, and burnout will not make it easier. The most successful job seekers ask for support instead of trying to figure everything out alone.
If you’re still employed, don’t get too comfortable. Keep your résumé and LinkedIn current, strengthen the skills you want to be known for, and continue building relationships beyond your company. Make sure your profile reflects your value, your target roles, and the results you deliver. Build your financial safety net a little at a time.
No one is immune to career turbulence, but you do not have to be caught off guard.
